Cornhole game Rules! What Is a Cornhole?

Cornhole, also known as bags, corn toss, bag toss, bean bag, and bean toss, is one of America’s most prevalent lawn games. You can play this cornhole game with two players or four players. In addition, you can play the game one-on-one, or you can make two teams of two players. Players take various turns trying to toss bags for one point onto the board or for three points through the “cornhole.”

Cornhole Equipment

If you want to play backyard cornhole, you need to have the following equipment:

  • Boards

You need to have identical two-foot-by-four-foot boards. In addition, the boards should have a six-inch hole that should be centered nine inches from the upper side. There are numerous official cornhole boards that have foldable legs on the backside. So, when you open the legs of such boards, they create a sloppy surface. Ensure that the board’s playing surface should be 3 to 4 inches from the ground surface in the front and 12 inches in the back.

  • Bags

To play this game, you need to have a total of 8 bean bags. Four bags should be of one color, and four should be of another color. The size of the bags should be 6 to 6 inches, and their weight should be 15 to 16 ounces. When you purchase cornhole game bags, make sure to buy bags made up of durable material. Thus, you can store them and use them repeatedly.

Moreover, many cornhole game sets come with bags also. So, make sure to double-check the game set before making any purchase. You can also add some features to your official cornhole boards by using the licensed cornhole decals. The decals should feature your favorite team’s logo; that would be an excellent addition for tailgate parties.

  • Setup & Gameplay

Before playing the game, you should know the proper setup of the game. You should keep the boards 27 feet apart by measuring from the front side of each board and placing them in a position where they directly face each other. If you can find the flattest area to place the boards, it would be the best setup for your game.

When you start the game, you and the player from the opposite team throw the bags until each player has completed throwing four bags. The team or player who wins in the first frame can throw the bag first in the next frame. However, if no team or player scores, then the team or player who threw in the first frame will also throw the bag in the next.

  • Cornhole Scoring

According to the cornhole game rules, the game is played till 21 points are achieved. The players get the points on the following basis:

  • If the bean bag directly goes through the hole, the team gets 3 points
  • The team gets 1 point when the bags hit the hole but remain on the board.
  • There is also a rule of cancellation scoring that determines the points.

The third point can be cleared from the following example:

In the initial frame of the game, the Blue Team gets two bags on the board and one bag through the hole. So, there will be a total of five points.

The Red Team gets one bag on the board and two bags through the hole in the same frame. So, there will be a total of seven points.

So, according to the cancellation scoring, the Red team will not score 7 points. Instead, the Red team will subtract the score from the Blue team, and there will be a total of 2 points for the Red team and 0 points for the Blue team in the first frame.

This is how the players score in the cornhole game. Always remember that the bags that first hit the ground and then go to the board do not give any point in the game.

It is the rule of the game that one team has to score 21 points in order to win the game. Of course, there are various views on the game’s scoring system, but if we talk about the official rules, the first team who reaches the maximum score of 21 wins the game.

Cornhole Game Playing Tips

Cornhole Game Playing Tips

Do you want to be a better cornhole player? Here we are writing some tips that you need to remember when you play a cornhole game or pick a bean bag.

Think Small

The first tip is that you need to think small instead of thinking big. For example, when you only focus on passing the bags from the corn hole, you can make errors that will be an errant toss. So, instead of focusing on the cornhole, focus on the board front. In these cases, you have more chances to slide your bags into the whole. However, if you fail to slide into the hole, your bag should be in a position that restricts your opponent’s chance to enter his bag into the hole.

Spins Equal Wins

If we observe the top cornhole game players of the world, they do not only lob the bag. Instead, they spin the bag with a “pancake” or “flat” style. So, here the tip is that your bean bag should spin horizontally at a slight downward angle to the ground. With this technique, you have more chances to slide your bag into the hole.

In addition, make sure that you do not use your wrist for bag spin as people do when they throw Frisbee. Instead, use your fingers and keep your wrist straight when you spin the bag.

Keep Yourself Cool

You do not need to panic. Stay relaxed, calm, and have fun. Play with a cool mind and don’t take tension. Because if you handle stress, you will suffer in your game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the few answers to frequently asked questions about game rules and play.

Where do you stand when throwing?

When throwing the bag, you stand directly next to the board. There is a fantasy three-foot-wide box of pitchers that runs the board length. You need to stay within this imaginary space when throwing.

How far can you step forward when throwing?

There is a foul line (front of the box) that you need to follow. You cannot cross that line when throwing the bean bags.

Can you stand behind the boards to throw?

No, you cannot stand behind the boards as this is outside of the labeled pitcher’s box.

Do you have to throw underhand?

According to the ACO (American Cornhole Organization), all players must carry the bags with an underhand release.
